Deborah Crane
Master of Arts in Theatre
Registered Voice Movement Therapist |
Deborah Crane has been fascinated by voice her whole life. As a child it was through the act of singing that she set herself free. As a young woman she took traditional voice lessons, but was discouraged in this pursuit and was told by one voice teacher that she would never be able to perform.
Deborah finished college with a degree in education, had a family and worked as a counselor for many years. But the passion for working with voice would not be silenced. The initial re-emergence of Deborah's voice came through working with Susan Osborn. Through her work with Susan, Deborah was, for the first time in her life able to identify herself as a singer. Deborah also recognized during this time that singing, bodywork and therapy were interrelated activities.
Through her search for more information about this relationship Deborah found Voice Movement Therapy. Voice Movement Therapy is an expressive arts therapy founded by Paul Newham in England. In 1999, after a two-year intensive training, Deborah, along with her classmates, was awarded a Diploma in Voice Movement Therapy in the only qualification course Mr. Newham taught in the United States.
In addition to her credentials as a Registered Voice Movement Therapist, Deborah has studied with voice experts who utilize a multiplicity of approaches to working with voice. These include Richard Armstrong of the Roy Hart Theatre and Leigh Smiley, designated Linklater teacher.
Deborah holds a Masters Degree in Theatre from Villanova University. The subject of her final project at Villanova was a historical perspective and critical analysis of four approaches to working with voice.
Deborah has been a director of the International Association for Voice Movement Therapy for several years and is currently serving as President of the association.
Deborah brings to her work, not only her substantial background in vocal work, but also the skills she has honed through her counseling work. Deborah has worked with young people and adults, bringing compassion and clarity to each encounter whether the circumstance involves counseling, consultation or training.
In private sessions and workshops, Deborah has helped people of all ages explore the interplay of the voice and psyche for over twenty years. She invites the creative self to come out and play.
